Integrating biodiversity into forest management
Le 05 June 2025 - Chimay
Objectives
The management of the Sejournet family's forest estate on the Hauts Marais is marked by a policy that fully integrates biodiversity and its development into a management system that remains productive. As a result of the many improvements made, the estate has been awarded the prestigious Baillet Latour prize and the Wildlife estate label.
After a brief introduction outlining the management principles of the estate, we will visit the various recent developments designed to benefit the forest's fauna, flora and resilience. We will see, among other things, a checkerboard plantation of almost 50 tree species, a network of 50 ponds and pools, reptile patches (regularly occupied by adder vipers and ring-necked snakes), «resilient forest» plantations, agri-environmental measures and the restoration, as part of Natura2000, of a birch oak forest with riparian alder and forest pools in place of a spruce forest.
This restoration has benefited from European subsidies and the support of Natagriwal, who will be there to talk about it. Finally, we will visit a plot of land whose owner would like to turn it into a private nature reserve, and discuss what needs to be done there.
The 5-6 km route is on foot (boots essential for the afternoon).
