Objectives

The Nismes arboretum, like many historic arboretums, was planted at the beginning of the 20th century.th century. The species planted here come from North America, southern Europe and Asia. Compared with the other arboretums in Wallonia, it has the particularity of being planted on superficial limestone soil, and so is regularly subjected to intense drought conditions. As a result, many of the species planted there have suffered greatly, and some have not survived the droughts of recent years. This situation makes the Nismes arboretum a particularly relevant observatory of the future of a certain number of species, and enables us to select those that are the most resistant. Another advantage of this arboretum is the natural regeneration that is taking place under its canopy, particularly under the Austrian black pines, which makes it possible to consider strategies for introducing new species in a context of irregular and mixed forestry.
