Objectives
Are you a future or new forest owner or manager who wants to take charge of managing your woodland? These educational and practical workshops will introduce you to the various aspects of woodland management. These varied workshops are an excellent first approach to forestry training. They will give you a good idea of the training courses and field days offered by the RFSB throughout the year, and may even inspire you to sign up for the ‘ForêtFor’ training module that will be presented during the day.

The day will take the form of a series of one-hour workshops designed to help you get to grips with the forest and discover the basics of forest management. Today, you have the opportunity to choose 4 of the 8 workshops on offer:
- Measuring and cubing timber
Discover the main tree measuring instruments and how to use them. - Natural oak regeneration
How can I naturally regenerate the oaks in my woods, and what operations should be carried out to ensure the future of this regeneration at the different stages of its development? - Drawing up a management plan for my forest
What are the advantages of planning the management of my woodland, how do I go about it, consider PEFC certification... - Trimming, pruning, designating
These three operations are essential for obtaining quality wood. A practical workshop to introduce you to the different techniques and tools. - Developing the roads in my forest
Having passable tracks in your woods is a sine qua non for rational forest management. We'll be looking at how to build up an effective network of roads, and we'll be taking part in a mechanised road restoration project. - Carry out a thinning
Principles of thinning and practical exercise in regular softwood forestry - Choosing a tree suited to your soil
Practical analysis of the soil and its environment to determine which species to plant. - Assessing the quality of my trees
Classification of standing timber: Recognition of the main defects in trees and their impact on the quality and value of the timber.
