Objectives

Renewing a stand can be done by planting, by natural regeneration or by combining these two methods. Working with and for natural regeneration requires a certain amount of technical expertise and special skills available to the forestry contractors who are members of the UETFW. They will be offering various demonstrations of work to support natural regeneration in a Famennian context.

In this region of constrained soils, where climate change is hitting forests harder than elsewhere in Wallonia, it is particularly important not to put all one's eggs in one basket and to make the most of natural regeneration (whether or not mixed with plantations) in order to increase the resilience of the new stands AND to reason out the investment in the light of the risk incurred.

Discussions with the contractors and experts present will also address the delicate issue of site preparation: what alternative to full-scale shredding is there to preserve the forest atmosphere and/or to preserve/restore soil structure and improve plant recovery?.
