Assessing the quality of standing timber and mobile sawing
On 29 April 2025 - Seraing
Objectives
Climate change is forcing foresters to change their silvicultural practices. Wallonia's forests are increasingly becoming mixed forests. As a result, objective tree silviculture is often recommended in order to produce quality logs with high added value.
This type of forestry means that timber lots are smaller and more scattered across the country, making them less attractive to buyers. To compensate for this lack of attractiveness, several mobile sawmilling companies have developed in Wallonia.
During the day, you will learn how to recognise the characteristics of wood and assess the quality of standing trees. You will also be able to take part in a sawing session using a mobile sawmill, observe the repercussions in the wood of defects observed on the bark and discuss how to add value to hardwoods.
