Natural regeneration as a promising alternative for the renewal of large clear-cuts
Le 01 September 2025 - Paliseul
Objectives
The model of clear-cutting followed by full replanting of spruce showed its limitations during the bark beetle crisis, and many plots were not replanted because their owners were discouraged. Is the natural regeneration that takes place in these clear-cuts of good quality? Does it make it possible to reconstitute a resilient stand that is welcoming to biodiversity AND economically viable? What work needs to be carried out on this regeneration to give it a future? Is it necessary to enrich the stand by planting, and if so, how?
These are the questions that the research project led by Hugues Claessens' team of researchers (ULiège, Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech) is attempting to answer, and which we will be tackling both theoretically and practically on this day. After a talk by the Gembloux researchers, who will present their results, we will visit two old clear-cuts, carry out a diagnosis of the vegetation and carry out the necessary silvicultural work (designation of objective trees, high pruning, routing, formation pruning, etc.).
