Economic valuation of ecosystem services
Le 19 November 2025 - Gembloux
What are the services provided by our forests worth?
Forests produce wood... but not only wood. They also play a fundamental role in carbon sequestration, climate regulation and the water cycle. They provide a pleasant environment and contribute to the attractiveness of the region for tourists, they shelter biodiversity, contribute to the good health of the population and many other things besides. Is it possible to estimate the economic value of all these services provided by the forest? And if these services have an economic value, how are they remunerated? To answer these questions, we will benefit from the combined views of economist Frédéric Gaspart, Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Bioengineering and Earth & Life Institute (UCLouvain), and ecologist Marc Dufrêne, Professor of Ecology at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (ULiège). Their presentations will be followed by a debate with the audience.
