Producing large softwoods
Le 22 February 2024 - Bouillon
Objectives
Douglas fir and larch are two red-wooded softwoods. These two species are very common in the Walloon region. They are usually harvested at around 120-150 cm in circumference. However, with appropriate silviculture, it is possible to grow them to much larger sizes.
This is particularly true of Douglas fir, which has the advantage of maintaining good productivity as it ages.
What is the wood industry's interest in these large softwoods? What silvicultural practices should be adopted to produce good quality wood? What impact will this have on stand management?
We will try to answer these questions with specialists from TDR, the private forest and the sawmilling sector.
