Objectives

Overlooking the Meuse valley, the 5.4-hectare Petite Hulle arboretum was established in 1917 in the municipal woods. It features species from Europe, Asia and North America. Situated at the top of a rocky dome, it lies on very shallow ground. This restrictive situation, combined with the droughts of recent years, has led to significant tree mortality. However, some species have proved very resilient. Various species have been planted in response to the observed die-offs.

Over the course of the day, we will look at species that have been able to resist the consequences of climate change in these difficult conditions (tsuga, metasequoia, oriental spruce, etc.). We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these species, including their invasiveness, growth potential and uses for the wood. We will also look at which species have, on the contrary, suffered from climate change (red spruce, Vancouver fir, etc.). Finally, we will look at the possibilities of regeneration through planting.
