Objective
Larches are interesting coniferous species for diversifying forests. As productive species, they must be managed much more dynamically than spruce and Douglas fir to express their full potential. During this training, we will visit a thinning trial managed by the University of Liège-Gembloux-Agro-Bio-Tech. In this trial, we will be able to observe how the trees react to more or less severe and more or less early thinnings. Recommendations regarding regular larch silviculture will be issued at the conclusion of the visit. We will then visit a naturally regenerating plot where larch is very present but mixed with birch, pine, spruce, and oak. We will discuss monitoring methods to obtain a larch-dominant stand without ruling out favouring other species when larch is scarce or when their form or vigour allows. The most motivated can learn about targeted work in this type of situation.
