Diversifying one's stands through enrichment planting

The 2 July 2026 - Gesves and Houyet

Objective

Diversifying tree species and silvicultural practices (increased reliance on natural regeneration, assisted migration, SMCC, etc.) is now essential for adapting forests to climate change. To achieve this, foresters can use enrichment planting.

During this day, we will cover the different principles of enrichment planting, practical recommendations for ensuring the success of these plantations, and the main causes of failure. We will visit two properties where plantations have been carried out: enrichment of a Scots pine stand (understorey planting to supplement natural regeneration, assisted migration) in the morning, followed by older enrichment plots in an area with high game pressure in the afternoon.
