Wide-spaced planting of precious hardwoods

The 2026 April 28 - Wavreille (Rochefort)

Objective

Wide-spaced plantations of precious hardwoods (e.g. 4 x 4m) are an attractive reforestation technique because they are relatively inexpensive to start with. However, the maintenance of such plantations raises many questions and there are relatively few documented returns from this type of system. Over the course of the day, we will visit a number of wide-spaced mixed plantations planted around twenty years ago with various hardwood species (cherry, walnut, maple, lime and whitebeam), supplemented by a variety of natural regeneration (birch, ash, oak, Douglas fir, etc.). We will look at how these plantations were designed at the time, and how they are still being managed today to produce promising stands that have reached the first thinning stage. We will look at different situations (clear-cut planting vs. canopy planting) with different mixes, and together we will consider the different management options for getting the best out of these pioneering experiments in mixed forestry. The priority of the day will be to share experience and good practice.
